Come with Confidence
When we know that love is what
God is and that he delights in us in the same way as good mothers and fathers
enjoy their children, we can come to him with confidence, knowing that
he will listen to our prayers and answer them. Jesus reminds us of this:
'When you pray, go away by yourself, all
alone, and shut the door behind you
and pray to your Father secretly, and your Father, who knows exactly what
you
need even before you ask him!' (Matthew
6:6,8 Living Bible)
I like the way
Jesus reminds us that our Heavenly Father knows our secrets and that he
also knows exactly what we need before we ask him. This mans that we can
pray with an expectation that God will not only listen to us, he will help
us in the way which is best for us at any given moment.
It also means
that we do not have to pray long prayers. The Jews used to think that if
their prayers were long and loud, God would answer them more quickly. But
Jesus made it clear that praying like this is unnecessary:
"When you pray, do not keep on babbling like
pagans, for they think that they will
be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father
knows
what you need before you ask him.'
(Matthew 6:7,8)
